!مرحبا
Merhaba!

Thank you for your interest in studying Arabic with Deewan! Below is some information about Arabic lessons here at Deewan that we hope you find helpful, and we are happy to answer any questions you may have.

COLLOQUIAL LEVANTINE ARABIC

Colloquial Levantine Arabic is a group of Arabic dialects spoken in the Levant region, which includes countries including Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine. This dialect group is characterized by several features that distinguish it from Modern Standard Arabic, including pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.

FUSHA (MSA, MEDIA AND CLASSICAL ARABIC)

FusHa, also known as Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), Media Arabic, or Classical Arabic, is the standardized literary form of the Arabic language. It is used in formal communication, academic settings, media, and literature across the Arab world.

FusHa is based on Classical Arabic, the language of the Quran and Classical Islamic texts, and has been developed to suit modern needs while maintaining its classical roots. It is used in newspapers, books, official documents, and is the language of instruction in schools and universities throughout the Arab world.

MIXED ARABIC (COLLOQUIAL & FUSHA)

Also known as "Arabic Diglossia" refers to the use of both Modern Standard Arabic (MS and Colloquial Arabic in the same conversation or text. It is a common practice in many Arabic-speaking countries where people switch between MSA and their local dialect depending on the context and audience.

MSA is typically used in formal settings such as news broadcasts, political speeches, and academic writing, while colloquial Arabic is used in informal settings such as conversations between friends and family, and in everyday situations like shopping or ordering food. Mixed  Arabic can be challenging for learners of Arabic because it requires an understanding of both MSA and colloquial Arabic and the ability to switch between them depending on the situation. However, it is an essential skill for anyone who wants to communicate effectively in Arabic-speaking countries and understand the nuances of the language.

MIDDLE EASTEN STUDIES

This is an interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on the history, politics, culture, society, and languages of the Middle East. It covers the countries and regions of the Middle East, including North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Turkey, Iran, and Palestine/Israel. Middle Eastern Studies draws on a range of academic disciplines, including history, political science, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, literature, and religion. It examines the complex interactions between political, social, economic, and cultural factors that shape the region’s development and identity.

DIPLOMACY ARABIC

This is a specialized form of Arabic used in diplomatic communication between Arabic-speaking countries and international organizations. It is a variant of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and is used to communicate official and formal messages between governments, diplomats, and international organizations. Diplomacy Arabic uses a specific set of vocabulary, grammar, and expressions that are unique to diplomatic communication. It requires a high level of proficiency in MSA, as well as knowledge of political and cultural issues relevant to the region.

Students can choose to attend conversation groups on a flexible basis, with no obligation to participate in every session.

GROUP COURSES

Group courses give students the opportunity to learn Arabic together in a classroom. These courses provide a comprehensive introduction to Arabic, covering all aspects of Arabic language learning, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, and writing, focusing on the conversation.

Students learn Arabic in a structured, supportive environment with others who share their learning goals. Group courses can be a great way to build community among Arabic learners and practice conversation skills with other students. Deewan group courses are offered at different levels, from beginner to advanced, to accommodate students with varying proficiency levels. Classes are usually structured with a set curriculum and regular assessments to monitor progress.

ONE-ON-ONE LESSONS

These lessons are individualized language instruction where a student works directly with an Arabic language teacher in a private setting, rather than in a group class. This type of instruction can be highly effective for students who want to focus on specific areas of Arabic language learning, such as conversation, grammar, reading, or writing. It also allows the teacher to tailor the instruction to the student's individual needs and learning style. The teacher can provide personalized feedback and support and can adjust the pace and content of the lessons to match the student's level of proficiency and learning goals.

TWO-ON-ONE LESSONS

This option allows two students to receive instruction together with a single teacher. This format provides several benefits, including more personalized attention than a larger group class, opportunities for peer-to-peer interaction and practice, and potential cost savings compared to individualized one-on-one instruction.
